  • "I just ruined a job interview from laughing too much."

  • Anyway, I finally got a video interview with a company whose Glassdoor rating is 2.1. This is the first real opportunity I've gotten since I was laid off two months ago, so I just went for it.
  • The job was customer service, basically booking appointments for clients. There were two people interviewing me, a man and a woman, explaining the job on the call.
  • The man said there's "mandatory overtime" every other Saturday. I asked him what the overtime pay rate was, and he told me it's calculated at the same rate as a regular hour.
  • I'm pretty sure that's illegal, but he explained some weird system where they balance the hours over two weeks so it's not officially considered overtime.
  • I couldn't hold it in, and a laugh escaped. I tried to move past it, but the more they talked, the harder it became to control myself.
  • Health insurance for a single person costs $700 a month. This time, I laughed out loud, imagining the comments you all would write on a post about this place.
  • To put it in perspective, that amount is almost a full week's salary, just for their 'benefits'.
  • Then they said there are mandatory, unpaid 'on-call' periods, which means "just in case we need you." "And you're expected, as soon as you finish your work, to start clearing the backlog for your teammates." The final blow: the job pays $17 an hour, and you have to bring your own equipment.
  • They want to install their monitoring software on my personal computer, and I have to give the dual monitors.
  • People complain and say 'nobody wants to work anymore'... This is exactly why. Edit: Most wages are currently not logical.
  • They want you to be a superhero and work several jobs in one job, and when you refuse this exploitation, you become the one who does not want to work.
  • The problem is that we spend a very long time improving our resumes using a suitable resume kit and applying for all the jobs that match our skills, and in the end, this is the interview opportunity.
  • If I remain unemployed, it is better than accepting this opportunity.

  • Ruh_Roh- And those are the kind of companies hiring right now. So shitty they can't keep employees even in a terrible job market. I wouldn't be surprised if they still offered you the job even after the laughing.
  • SunBusiness8291 You didn't laugh enough. They earned every bit of it.
  • KnottaBiggins >They want to install their monitoring software on my personal computer... That right there is a deal killer. Remember - interviews go two ways. Sounds like they failed.
  • Oldgatorwrestler Yeah. I'm glad you laughed at them. Overtime is, by federal law, paid at time and a half and it it anything over 8 hours in a day or 40 hours in a week. They can't work you 60 hours for one week and 20 for the other and just pay you regular rate for 80 hours. And on call time had to be paid. Etc. Sounds like they admitted to violating federal law a bunch of times during a single interview.
  • FightingSideOfMe1 As someone looking for a job, you really kept your dignity. Laughing was the least you can do and probably, those who are interviewing you are also looking for jobs elsewhere. You can tell that they pray on the desperate. About bringing my own laptop, I told one company with the same requirements, "supposedly I watch adult content on my laptop, and a virus attacks my machine, are you okay with your documents to be paraded on those website?, of course, this is an edge case, but
  • jojothebuffalo You could have accepted the job and then unionized!!
